Welcome to my first issue of “BGEN: Aal Goes Gigging” — a visual article series on Black Girl Emo Night where I bring you with me, an alt Black femme creative, to the barricade and beyond. From DIY basements to festival stages, with my camera in hand, I document moments that speak to my inner alt child and highlight musicians of color making noise in spaces that don’t always make room for us.
Each post centers my perspective while uplifting the work of black and brown musicians who push genre boundaries and challenge expectations. This series is for anyone who’s ever felt like the only face of color at the show, who seeks honest reflections on showing up and being seen in music spaces. These photos and stories are my love letters, and I’m excited to share more of my journey and gig with you.
With love and liberation,
Aal
